The native file management formats of Windows NT/2000 and the other operating systems are not compatible. If the disk is formatted with NTFS, the DOS or Windows 9x operating system will not be able to read the files in the NTFS partition. These operating systems are not "NTFS Aware." However, Windows NT and Windows 2000 can both operate with the FAT file systems used by DOS and Windows 3.x/9x. Therefore, it is recommended that logical drives in a dual-boot system be formatted with the FAT system.

After the primary partition has been established and properly configured, an additional partition, referred to as an extended partition, is also permitted. However, the extended partition can be subdivided into 23 logical drives. The extended partition cannot be deleted if logical drives have been defined within it.

To create a dynamic volume, it must be either a simple or a mirrored volume and it must be a volume that can be upgraded from a basic volume. Installing Windows 2000 on the volume requires that it have a partition table, which dynamic volumes normally do not have unless they have been upgraded from a basic volume. Basic volumes are converted to dynamic volumes using the Disk Management tool (follow the path Start/Run, enter DISKMGMT.MSC into the text box, and then click the OK button).

The active partition is the logical drive that the system will boot to. The system files must be located in this partition, and the partition must be set to Active for the system to boot up from the drive.

The hierarchy of assigning logical drive designations in the IDE interface calls for primary partitions to be assigned sequentially from ID1 master, ID1 slave, ID2 master, to ID2 slave. This is followed by assigning drive letters to the extended partitions for each drive in the same order.
