In newer system boards, the BIOS can be upgraded without changing the ROM IC by flashing (electrically altering) the information in the BIOS with the latest compatibility firmware. In these systems, new BIOS information is downloaded into the BIOS IC where it is permanently held until it is rewritten (even if power is removed from the IC).

If the BIOS does not locate the boot record in of the indicated drives, it will most likely display a "Non-System Disk," "Disk Error," or "ROM BASIC Interpreter Not Found" message on the screen.
