If the device is not PnP, or ifit must beinstalled manually because Windows 9x could not detect it, selecting the No option and clicking Next will produce a hardware component list. The Hardware Wizard guides the manual installation process from this point and prompts the user for any necessary configuration information. FAT32 file system must be implemented. Windows 98 can only recognizes FAT32, while Windows 2000 can recognize both. In order for both operating systems to exist on the same partition, it must be able to recognize a common file system.

Slipstream is a service provided by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows 2000 that allows users to install Windows 2000 with the service pack already applied during the install.

To perform a slipstreaming install, follow the below steps:

  1. Copy the complete Windows 2000 CD to the hard disk drive or a distribution location on the network.
  2. On the service pack update.exe, run the following command:

    update.exe -s x:\distribute\Win2kPro

  3. Once completed, run the install for Windows 2000 and this will install Windows 2000 with the service pack already installed
