Protons are atoms that carry a positive charge. Just as x-rays are used to treat both benign and malignant tumors, a beam of protons can be used to radiate tumors in the same way. There is essentially no biological difference between x-ray and protons, except that protons release most of their energy when they hit the tumor and deliver no exit dose beyond the tumor boundary. Therefore, the dose of radiation conforms to the tumor better and there is less damage to healthy tissue. As a result, the treating physician (a radiation oncologist) can give an even greater dose to the tumor while minimizing unwanted side effects. This is especially important when treating children, because it reduces radiation to growing and developing tissues.

The following guidelines can help you determine if it's safe for you to start playing your sport again.

  • You are pain free
  • You have full range of motion (compare the injured part with the uninjured opposite side)
  • You have full or close to full (90 percent) strength (again, compare with the uninjured side)
  • You have no swelling
  • For lower body injuries: you can perform full weight bearing on injured hips, knees, and ankles without limping
  • For upper body injuries: you can perform throwing movements with proper form and no pain

These being just guidlines, following up with your physician's advice regarding return to play is a must.

THOUGHT PROCESS: The Hiring Manger is looking for sales skills and your strategic process in dealing with physicians.

SAMPLE ANSWER: First, I would NOT expect the physician to make a sudden change to my drug if he is happy with the drug he is currently prescribing. I am going to have to start small and expand his usage (nibble away market share). I would determine what influences his behavior: reprints, speaker programs, peers, and formularies. I would use a combination of the appropriate tools to gain physician agreement on my drug's effectiveness. After this, I would gain commitment from him to use the drug on a specific patient type. After the physician has tried my drug on this patient type, I would get him to notice the success on this patient when the patient comes back in for a follow up visit. When the physician admitted efficacy, I would then gain commitment for use in other patient types. This is comparable with my current business.

THOUGHT PROCESS: Again, The Hiring Manager is really trying to determine if you know the true challenges a representative faces daily. They are also trying to determine if you have the skills to meet these challenges.

SAMPLE ANSWER: Well number one, I think its probably getting quality time with the physician to impact prescribing behavior. Another challenge I think you would face is there are physicians that don't see representatives. You have to be creative in finding a way to gain access to them. If you are currently in sales and face these obstacles in your present job, be sure to add this to your answer.

In the Nuclear medicine process the doses of radiopharmaceutical administered are very small, nuclear medicine procedures result in exposure to a small dose of radiation. Nuclear medicine has been used for more than five decades, and there are no known long-term adverse effects from such low-dose studies.

As with all radiologic procedures, be sure to inform your physician if you are pregnant. In general, exposure to radiation during pregnancy should be kept to a minimum.

Allergic reactions to the radiopharmaceutical can occur, but are extremely rare.
