Show them how you work. Setting good examples works better than lecturing. If they can immitate how you work, then you've already set something positive into motion. Leave them alone to formulate their own strategy but be there for guidance. Build people's confidence instead of ruling overthem. Form a team that is focused on delivering quality work and results.

You delegate to free yourself up for higher value activities. You are in the position you are in because you bring to the table certain skills, abilities, knowledge, etc, that your subordinates don't have ... that's why you were hired into that position, or promoted into it, etc. You want to focus on your highest value activities -- where you have the biggest impact on increasing revenue, saving time, saving money etc.

You also delegate because you want to keep your subordinates "optimized" -- or working efficiently "in the zone" of flow where challenges equal abilities.

Start other people in motion before you set yourself in motion. Always delegate first, before you yourself get to work.
