No. Some policies cover only disabilities arising from an accidental injury, providing no coverage for disabilities caused by sickness. A careful reading of the contract is recommended to determine the extent of coverage provided under the disability insurance policy that you are considering purchasing. Sound risk management suggests the purchase of a policy that covers disabilities arising from either an accident or an illness.

The following guidelines can help you determine if it's safe for you to start playing your sport again.

  • You are pain free
  • You have full range of motion (compare the injured part with the uninjured opposite side)
  • You have full or close to full (90 percent) strength (again, compare with the uninjured side)
  • You have no swelling
  • For lower body injuries: you can perform full weight bearing on injured hips, knees, and ankles without limping
  • For upper body injuries: you can perform throwing movements with proper form and no pain

These being just guidlines, following up with your physician's advice regarding return to play is a must.

  • Always use proper body mechanics in sports involving repetitive stress to the upper extremities.
  • Listen to your body. Pain is a warning sign of injury. You should not work through pain, but stop or slow your activity until the pain subsides.
  • Train for your sport. Use specific skills training to prepare for your sport.
  • Cross train for overall conditioning and to allow specific muscles to rest. Cross training will also alleviate boredom and staleness.
