Because of industry moves away from anything related to ISA cards, the PCI bus has become the dominant force in system board designs. Each generation of PCI designs has provided fewer and fewer ISA buses. Current designs include three or four PCI slots, an AGP slot, and might include a single ISA connector for compatibility purposes (or none at all).

While the ISA bus originally ran at microprocessor- compatible speeds up to 10 or 12MHz Turbo speeds, incompatibility with slower adapter cards caused manufacturers to settle for running them at 8 or 8.33MHz in newer designs.

Most portable designs only include two Type II-sized PC Card slots. These slots can physically accommodate two Type I or Type II cards, or a single Type III card. Type III cards only use one of the two 68-pin JEIDA connectors but take up the entire opening.

Typically, the first item to be dropped from a new notebook design is the internal floppy drive. So much of the latest software is distributed on CD-ROM that those drives now have preference in newer designs. Because large volumes of software are still available on floppy disks (and so many users have cherished data stored on floppy disks), an external FDD is a common add-on option for new notebooks.
