LINQ defines standard query operators that allow code written in LINQ-enabled languages to filter, enumerate, and create projections of several types of collections using the same syntax. Such collections may include arrays, enumerable classes, XML, datasets from relational databases, and third party data sources. The LINQ project uses features of version 2.0 of the .NET Framework, new LINQ-related assemblies, and extensions to the C# and Visual Basic .NET languages. Microsoft has distributed a preview release of LINQ, consisting of those libraries and compilers for C# 3.0 and Visual Basic 9. Other languages, such as F# and Nemerle, have also announced preliminary support.

The .NET Framework 3.5 provides the foundation for building connected and appealing applications, productively, on a wide variety of systems from the device to the data center.

Microsoft continues to support developers using the .NET Framework platform by providing support for applications built in previous versions to the 3.5 release, so existing applications built for .NET Framework 2.0 or .NET Framework 3.0 will continue to work.

The .NET Framework 3.5 adds new features in several major technology areas:

• Deep integration of Language Integrated Query (LINQ) and data awareness.
• Support for Web 2.0 AJAX-style applications and services in ASP.NET and WCF.
• Full tooling support for WF, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), including the new workflow-enabled services technology.
• New classes in the base class library (BCL) for the .NET Framework 3.5 address the most common customer requests.

The .NET Framework class library is a library of classes, interfaces, and value types that are included in the Windows Software Development Kit (SDK). This library provides access to system functionality and is designed to be the foundation on which .NET Framework applications, components, and controls are built.

SOAP is an XML-based messaging framework specifically designed for exchanging formatted data across the Internet, for example using request and reply messages or sending entire documents. SOAP is simple, easy to use, and completely neutral with respect to operating system, programming language, or distributed computing platform. The Web Services Description Language (WSDL) is a particular form of an XML Schema

An industry initiative to create a platform-independent, open framework for describing services, discovering businesses, and integrating business services using the Internet, as well as a registry. It is being developed by a vendor consortium.

Simple Object Access Protocol. A lightweight protocol intended for exchanging structured information in a decentralized, distributed environment. It defines, using XML technologies, an extensible messaging framework containing a message construct that can be exchanged over a variety of underlying protocols.

Resource Description Framework. A standard for defining the kind of data that an XML file contains. Such information can help ensure semantic integrity-for example-by helping to make sure that a date is treated as a date rather than simply as text.

The framework events of a J2EE component's existence. Each type of component has defining events that mark its transition into states in which it has varying availability for use. For example, a servlet is created and has its init method called by its container before invocation of its service method by clients or other servlets that require its functionality. After the call of its init method, it has the data and readiness for its intended use. The servlet's destroy method is called by its container before the ending of its existence so that processing associated with winding up can be done and resources can be released. The init and destroy methods in this example are callback methods. Similar considerations apply to the life cycle of all J2EE component types: enterprise beans, Web components (servlets or JSP pages), applets, and application clients.

The Wireless Application Environment (WAE) provides a application framework for small devices. WAE leverages other technologies such as WAP, WTP, and WSP.

The Generic Connection Framework (GCF) makes it easy for wireless devices to make network connections. It is part of CLDC and CDC and resides in the javax.microedition.io package.
