GMO - Genetically modified organism (GMO) is Genetic material of an organism is  altered with the help of genetic engineering techniques generally known as recombinant DNA technology. DNA molecules from one source is combined with the DNA of other in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. The recombinant DNA is then transferred into an organism causing the expression of modified or novel traits. The product is also known as an Genetically Engineered Organism or GEO.

Examples Transgenic animals (mice, fish),  transgenic plants (BT Cotton, Flavour Savour Tomato), or various microbes (fungi and bacteria) . The production and use of GMOs are ivolved in biology or medicine, for the production of pharmaceuticals and industrial enzymes, and for direct, and often controversial, applications aimed at improving human health (e.g., gene therapy) or agriculture (e.g., golden rice). For example, a gene from a jellyfish, encoding a fluorescent protein called GFP, can be physically linked and thus co-expressed with mammalian genes to identify the location of the protein encoded by the GFP-tagged gene in the mammalian cell. The indispensable use of GMO is in many areas of research, such as to study the mechanisms of human and other diseases .

The criteria are primarily intended for everyday clothes and domestic textiles. Textiles for

public places, workwear and the like can be assessed if they have not undergone special

treatments to give a dirt repellent surface, flame retarding treatment, etc.

Products at various stages of refinement can be ecolabelled, i.e. the product may consist of a yarn, a fabric or a finished garment.

One application must be submitted for each product. A product is defined as an item that is

manufactured from a single fibre raw material and has undergone the same manufacturing

process. Several different shades of colour are permitted in the same application, if all other

factors are identical.

  1. The product must consist chiefly of textile fibre. Apart from the fibre the only other itemsthat may be included in the product are elastic tape, buttons, belts, zips and the like.
  2. Textile fibres include all types of natural fibre; cotton, linen, wool, silk, hemp, ramie, jute, etc. Artificial fibres that can be assessed include viscose, polyamide, polyester and acrylics.
  3.  Recycled fibres are approved regardless of the type of fibre. Apart from the fibres mentioned, a blend of up to 10 percent by weight of elastan and other types of fibre is permitted.
  4. No environmental requirements are imposed on elastic tape, buttons, belts, zips and similar items in this version of the criteria.
  5. The criteria do not apply to products that have been treated with flame retardants during fibre manufacture or preparation.

Transgenic plants have been used to produce insect resistance plants like cotton, soya and corn. But now efforts are ben made to produce plants with improved product quality. In addition to that transgenic plants are going to be most sought after bioreators for producing edible vaccine, anitbodies, bioplastic, highly saturated oil, pharmaceuticals, and for many other metabolic products and byproducts of ecomonic importance.
