The most popular form of error detection in PC compatibles is parity checking. In this methodology, an extra bit is added to each word in RAM and checked each time it is used. Parity checking is a simple self test used to detect RAM read-back errors. Like refreshing, parity checking requires additional circuitry and memory overhead to operate.
