You will quickly learn that military runs on rumors. Unfortunately, rumors are usually wrong, and can be deadly for morale. If you hear a rumor, take it for what it's worth, not much! Since you don't know the truth, don't spread the rumor; and whatever you do, don't let rumors mess with your head. Again, rumors are about 10 percent truth and 90 percent fiction.

Recruit Basic Training, also referred to as "Boot Camp," If you have the courage to succeed, "Boot Camp" will help you develop into a mature, highly disciplined, and fully capable servicemember. During this time, Drill Instructors (DI) will teach you how to care for yourself and others, function as a member of a team and to achieve success together. Recruit Training includes first aid, water survival skills, marksmanship, tactics and other related topics. The other things that are important to know is:

  • Boot camp is mostly a mind game. It's designed to take the civilian out of you and replace it with a top-notch military servicemember (Soldier, Sailor, Marine, or Airman).
  • Keep a good attitude. Everyone gets chewed out in boot camp, even when they have done well. It won't be this way after you graduate Basic.
  • Never, ever, make excuses. Unless you are asked to explain yourself, explanations are seen as excuses, so just say "Yes, sir" and take the chewing out.
  • Do exactly what you're told to do, when you're told to do it, and how you're told to do it.
  • If you're "on time," then you're late. Always be where you're supposed to be five minutes early.

The Air Force focuses on these areas:

Aerospace Superiority: The ability to control what moves through air and space ensures freedom of action.

Information Superiority: The ability to control and exploit information to our nation's advantage ensures decision dominance.

Global Attack: The ability to engage adversary targets anywhere, anytime, holds any adversary at risk.

Precision Engagement: The ability to deliver desired effects with minimal risk and collateral damage, denies the enemy sanctuary.

Rapid Global Mobility: The ability to rapidly position forces anywhere in the world, ensures unprecedented responsiveness.

Agile Combat Support: The ability to sustain flexible and efficient combat operations is the foundation of success.

The Verdict: The Air Force is focused on flying. There are also plenty of other opportunities on land though. If you like flying and/or working with flight systems & technology, the Air Force is for you.
